A senior Hamas leader told CBS news that it is “not so important” how many hostages are still alive. Ghazi Hamad, the senior Hamas member, stated that he doesn’t know and the number is not significant. The interview took place a day before the ceasefire between Israel and Hamas ended. Hamas had refused to release the hostages it had committed to release and began launching rockets toward southern Israel early Friday morning. Additionally, Hamad told CBS that Hamas had kidnapped a 10-month-old and four-year-old in order to pressure the Israeli government. He claimed that the family “paid the price because of the occupation.” Hamas has claimed that the mother and children were killed after being kidnapped, but the IDF has not confirmed these claims.
