Israel reconsidered closing Al Jazeera’s local bureau despite tensions with Qatar and Al Jazeera’s alleged pro-Hamas incitement. The decision came after the security cabinet authorized action against Lebanese channel Al Mayadeen for harming Israel’s security interests. Communications Minister Shlomo Karhi also sought to block Al Mayadeen’s websites and shut down its offices in the West Bank. Although the government did not mention Al Jazeera in this decision, Karhi had previously expressed the intention to seek cabinet approval to shut down Al Jazeera’s local operations. Israeli Foreign Minister Eli Cohen also reiterated his support for a crackdown on Al Jazeera.
