Israel wants to create a buffer zone on the Palestinian side of Gaza’s border, say Egyptian sources. Israel informed Egypt, Jordan and the United Arab Emirates, as well as Saudi Arabia and Turkey, of its intentions. It is reaching out beyond established Arab mediators as it seeks to shape a post-war Gaza. Arab states have condemned the offensive. Israel is seeking to prevent future attacks and reaching out to its neighbors for support to achieve stability and a Palestinian state. Arab states oppose Israel’s idea of disarming northern Gaza and setting up a buffer zone in north Gaza with international supervision. Israel plans to deport Hamas leaders and has a “three-tier process” for the post-Hamas era. Israel once had a “security zone” in south Lebanon, evacuated in 2000, and has a similar plan for post-war Gaza. Gaza’s former security chief said the buffer zone plan was unrealistic and wouldn’t protect Israeli forces.
