The father of a wounded lone soldier from Australia met with President Isaac Herzog. Herzog was interested in the soldier’s condition and in the reaction of Australians and Australian Jewry to the Hamas massacre. The Zionist Federation of Australia President explained that the Jewish community had been traumatized and assimilated Jews have now discovered their Jewish identities. The United Israel Appeal had launched an emergency appeal, and people who had previously refused to donate were now giving money. The amount raised totals $30 million, with more expected. $3 million was donated at one particular function, and the majority of Australians are pro-Israel. Pro-Palestinian rallies in Australia are a cause for concern for the security of the Jewish community. The situation is not as bad as in America, and Melbourne’s Monash University is supportive of Jewish students. President Herzog concluded the meeting with a message of unity between Israel and world Jewry.
